How to Build a Skincare Routine for Your Skin Type

May 8, 20266 min read

Why Your Skin Type Matters

Building an effective skincare routine starts with one fundamental question: what is your skin type? Using the wrong products for your skin type is the number one reason routines fail. A heavy cream that works wonders on dry skin can cause breakouts on oily skin, and a mattifying gel that controls shine will leave dry skin feeling tight and uncomfortable.

The five main skin types are oily, dry, combination, sensitive, and normal. Most people fall somewhere on a spectrum rather than fitting neatly into one category, and your skin type can shift with seasons, age, and hormonal changes.

The Universal Routine Framework

Regardless of your skin type, every effective routine follows the same basic structure. Think of it as a framework you customize with products suited to your needs.

Morning Routine (AM)

Step 1: Gentle Cleanser. Wash away overnight oil and prep your skin. Oily skin benefits from a foaming or gel cleanser with salicylic acid. Dry skin does better with a cream or milk cleanser. If your skin is sensitive, look for fragrance-free formulas with ceramides.

Step 2: Serum or Treatment. This is where you target specific concerns. Vitamin C is the gold standard for mornings because it provides antioxidant protection against environmental damage and brightens skin tone. Niacinamide is another excellent morning active that controls oil and minimizes pores.

Step 3: Moisturizer. Even oily skin needs moisture. The key is choosing the right texture. Oily skin does well with lightweight gel moisturizers. Dry skin needs richer creams with hyaluronic acid and ceramides. Combination skin can use a light lotion, applying extra only to dry patches.

Step 4: Sunscreen (SPF 30+). Non-negotiable. UV damage causes 80 percent of visible skin aging. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher as the final step every single morning, rain or shine. Chemical sunscreens absorb into skin and feel lighter. Mineral sunscreens sit on top and are better for sensitive skin.

Evening Routine (PM)

Step 1: Double Cleanse. Start with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water to dissolve sunscreen and makeup, then follow with your regular water-based cleanser. This two-step process ensures truly clean skin without stripping.

Step 2: Active Treatment. Nighttime is when you use your strongest actives. Retinol is the most evidence-backed anti-aging ingredient available without a prescription. Start with a low concentration (0.25 percent) two to three nights per week and gradually increase. AHAs like glycolic acid exfoliate dead skin cells. BHAs like salicylic acid penetrate pores and help with acne.

Step 3: Moisturizer or Night Cream. Your PM moisturizer can be richer than your AM one since you do not need to worry about makeup or sunscreen layering on top. Look for ingredients like peptides, ceramides, and squalane for overnight repair.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using too many active ingredients at once is the fastest way to damage your skin barrier. Start with the basics, add one new product at a time, and wait two weeks before introducing another. If your skin stings, burns, or turns red, you are overdoing it.

Skipping sunscreen is the other critical mistake. No amount of serums and treatments can undo daily UV damage. Sunscreen is not optional.
